It is not hard to look stylish, you just have to have a conscious attitude to how you present yourself and invest a couple of minutes in the mirror when you dress in the morning.
1. Don’t use the bottom button
If you are wearing a single-breasted jacket, leave the bottom button unbuttoned.
2. The same rule is applicable when wearing a vest
In short: Never button the last button.
3. Your socks should either match or rock your outfit
With socks, you have only two options. a) Your socks should match your pants perfectly, or b) Your socks should rock your outfit.
4. Make sure you are spotless
Before you leave the house, do a quick once-over with a brush. At the same time, make sure that you do not have any stains or wrinkles.
5. Take your grooming seriously
If you have a beard, make sure to keep it trimmed. Don’t forget your nose and ears.
6. Make sure your suits fit
Ready-to-wear suits need to be altered. I repeat: Ready-to-wear suits need to be altered. If you are buying your suits at a place where they do not offer alteration, go buy your suits elsewhere.
7. Never wear a tie with a short-sleeved shirt
Unless you are wearing a uniform, leave your tie at home if you are wearing a short-sleeved shirt.
8. Match your leather
Your leather should always match. If you wear a black belt, both your shoes and your leather watch band should be black. The same is applicable to other colors. Buy watch bands that are easy to replace without using tools.
9. Make sure that your pocket square and your tie is not a perfect match
Your tie and handkerchief should never be made of the same fabric.
10. Know your knots
Real men tie their own bow ties and ties with the same ease they tie their shoelaces. If you want to take it to the next level, see my post on how to make your shoelaces stand out by adding some color.
11. Never show your undershirt
Get yourself some decent v-neck t-shirts.
12. Keep your shoes shining
Make sure that your shoes are always clean and newly polished. No one has ever managed to look stylish with a pair of dirty and unpolished shoes.
Except for driving shoes, monk straps, and sandals, all shoes without laces should be reserved for small children.
14. Buckle up
If your pants have belt loops, then always wear a belt. Please!
15. Wear a pocket square
Any time you’re wearing a jacket, wear a pocket square.
16. Get a good iron
The only way to stay wrinkle free is to have a good steam iron and ironing board.
17. Backpacks are for school or hiking trips
Get a messenger bag or a briefcase.
18. Invest in quality
Quality lasts longer than quantity.
