Clockers Bar – A hidden gem for gin lovers in Hamburg

Love gin? Visiting Hamburg? Then, don’t miss Clockers Bar. And I’m not only talking about the place. Be sure to get a taste of Glockers Gin.

I no longer visit Hamburg as often as I used to, but every time I do, I try to squeeze in a new gin place or, at least, a new gin. This time, I managed to do both – at the same location.

As I had only one short evening at my disposal, I had planned accordingly. When I arrived at the hotel, I knew that I had a bottle of gin waiting for me, all thanks to Amazon.de. My plan for the evening was to visit a bar or two in the St. Pauli area of Hamburg.

St. Pauli is home to the famous Reeperbahn – Hamburg’s red light district, this is a part of Hamburg that I have yet to explore in detail. My first impression is that the area has quite a number of good bars and restaurants.

My first destination for the evening was the 3Freunde Bar. To my surprise, this place was recently closed down. Luck would have it so that just two minutes from where I was, another supposedly good gin place was located. Off I went, in search of Clockers Bar.

When I arrived at the address, I thought I was in for yet another disappointment. I simply could not find the place. There were no signs indicating a place called Clockers Bar. Then I started looking for the address itself. There, above an unmarked door, that I assumed to be a backdoor to someplace in the next street, I spotted number 27. A bit careful, I opened the door. What met me inside was a pleasant surprise.

Inside was a cozy place with a warm atmosphere. I immediately chose my favorite spot in a new place; the bar counter.  From this vantage point, I can see the bartenders work while I enjoy my drink and try to figure out my next.

Having done some research, I knew that the place offered gin tasting events. Some bars offer a deal for people that walk in and want to taste what the place has to offer. Upon request, I was told that they didn’t, but I could taste what I wanted. No problem!

Feeling this was a good start, I wanted to taste their own products. There was little information online about the Clockers gin, so I really didn’t know what to expect.

In my humble opinion, Clockers Gin is the perfect marriage between juniper and sweet lemon.

The nose is classic juniper and citrus. The palate is where things are happening. The start is all juniper, but as you start to swallow, the taste changes to a pleasant, sweet lemon. The finish is all about citrus oils and a hint of spice.

I love creative bartenders. A perfect Gin and Tonic is beautifully garnished with items that not only are aesthetically pleasing but also adds aromas and tastes that compliments the gin and tonic used.

I was a bit skeptic when a Gin and Tonic with no garnish was placed in front of me.  The only contents of the glass beside icecubes were Clockers Gin and Fever Tree Indian Tonic.

The taste was perfect!

For the first time in my life, I was presented with a Gin and Tonic that was best on its own, without any complementary elements.

Next up was a taste of the Clockers 3-A-Gin. A special edition made for their three-year anniversary. Besides juniper, bergamot, mandarin and Constantinople quince is the basis for this gin.

If you think that their ordinary gin has too much lemon taste, the 3-A-Gin is more balanced. The different citruses play really well together. Again, this is a one-of-a-kind experience.

A passion for gin

Thanks to Lena behind the bar for giving me an experience I will remember for a long time. It is evident that both the owners and the employees at Clockers Bar have a passion for what they are doing. It’s nice to meet competent people with genuine knowledge about their field of work. This will not be my last visit.
